For most weddings, family photos take somewhere between twenty and thirty minutes.

That usually includes:

• Parents
• Siblings
• Grandparents
• Immediate family
• A few extended family groupings

The actual photography part moves quickly.

The challenge is making sure everyone who needs to be there is actually there.

Tell Your Family Ahead Of Time

The moment a ceremony ends, people have one thing on their mind.

Cocktail hour.

They’re ready for a drink, a snack, and a chance to mingle.

The problem is that family photos usually happen immediately after the ceremony, which means the people you need most are often the first people trying to disappear.

A quick conversation before the wedding goes a long way. Let family members know they’ll be needed for photos and ask them to stay nearby after the ceremony.

Your officiant can even make an announcement before dismissing guests.

Feed Your Family

This might be my favorite family photo tip.

If cocktail hour is happening in a different location, ask your planner, venue team, or caterer if they can bring water, champagne, or light refreshments to the family photo area.

Happy family members are cooperative family members.

A small tray of drinks can make a surprisingly big difference.

You Probably Need Fewer Photos Than You Think

When I help couples build their family photo lists, one of the biggest surprises is realizing they don’t need every possible combination.

Most couples care deeply about having photos with their immediate family.

When it comes to extended family, many are perfectly happy with a larger group photo instead of individual photos with every aunt, uncle, cousin, and second cousin.

There’s no right or wrong answer. The goal is simply to prioritize the relationships that matter most while keeping the timeline moving.

A Little Planning Goes A Long Way

Family photos don’t have to feel stressful.

When everyone knows where to be, refreshments are nearby, and the photo list is organized ahead of time, the process becomes surprisingly smooth.
