Rain is one of the biggest worries couples have leading up to their wedding day, but after photographing and filming weddings throughout North Carolina, I can tell you something important:

A forecast calling for rain all day rarely means it will actually rain all day.

First, We Let The Planner Do Their Job

When rain enters the conversation, the first step is making sure the backup plan is in place.

That’s where your planner shines.

Whether it’s moving the ceremony indoors, utilizing a covered space, or adjusting the timeline, their job is to create a solid plan.

Once we know the plan, we can stop worrying and start working with the conditions we’re given.

Then We Watch The Weather Closely

North Carolina weather loves keeping everyone on their toes. It’s incredibly common to see a forecast predicting rain from morning until night, only to end up with several dry windows throughout the day.

When that happens, we’re ready.

If you’re comfortable with it, we’ll step outside for portraits during those breaks and make the most of every opportunity. Sometimes those quick windows end up producing some of the most beautiful images of the day! Seriously, the sky after a rain is unreal.

Rain Doesn’t Mean Bad Photos

It means we get creative. Instead of focusing on every outdoor location we originally planned, we might lean into beautiful window light, covered porches, elegant indoor spaces, or architectural details throughout the venue.

Some venues are honestly stunning in rainy weather.

The mood feels different. The light softens. The day becomes more intimate.

You May Actually Spend More Time With Your Guests

This is the part that surprises people.

When we’re working primarily in one area of a venue, we’re often spending less time walking between locations.

We’re not trekking across the property chasing different photo spots.

Everything becomes a little more efficient.

That can actually mean more time spent with your guests and less time spent moving around.

There’s something about a rainy wedding day that brings people together. Everyone leans into it, guests huddle under umbrellas, laugh about the weather, and make the best of it together.

Years later, couples rarely remember the forecast. They remember the people.

And that’s what we’re documenting in the first place.

What If it’s An Absolute Monsoon?

Fair. Sometimes the rain is just too much to even think about stepping outside or you’re having an outdoor wedding with no other option. Heck, sometimes its a hurricane and you have to reschedule. I want you to take it in stride.
