When Colleen and Tyler reached out for their maternity session, it felt like catching up with old friends. Just a year earlier, I had photographed their wedding, and now they were stepping into a completely new season together. Being invited back to document another milestone in their lives is one of the greatest compliments I can receive as a photographer. It’s a reminder that these photographs become part of a family’s story, not just one chapter of it.

For this session, we leaned all the way into nostalgia.

A Potting Shed Inspired Maternity Session at Fleurish Greenhouse

Nestled just outside Raleigh, Fleurish Greenhouse was the perfect backdrop for the vision we had in mind.

Instead of treating the greenhouse like a traditional studio, we embraced its charming potting shed. Weathered wood, gardening tools, overflowing plants, and warm natural light created a space that felt lived in. It felt less like a photoshoot and more like spending a quiet afternoon preparing for a new chapter.

There wasn’t much posing involved. We let the environment do the heavy lifting while Colleen and Tyler simply enjoyed being together. Those small in-between moments always end up meaning the most.

Why We Chose Film Photography

Digital photography is incredible, but film has a way of slowing everything down.

Every frame matters. Every click of the shutter is intentional.

The subtle grain, the gentle colors, and the little imperfections all work together to create photographs that feel timeless. Looking through these images feels remarkably similar to flipping through your parents’ photo albums, which is exactly what made film the right choice for this session.

Years from now, their little one will be able to hold these photographs and see their parents exactly as they were while waiting to meet them.

That’s something really special.

Super 8 Film Makes Memories Feel Alive

Alongside film photography, we also documented their session on Super 8 film.

There is something almost impossible to explain about Super 8 until you see it.

The slight camera shake. The flicker. The softness. It doesn’t feel like watching a polished video. It feels like watching a memory.

As photographers and videographers, we’re constantly chasing authentic emotion. Super 8 naturally creates that feeling without trying too hard. It’s nostalgic in the best possible way.

For maternity sessions especially, it captures the anticipation and quiet excitement that can be difficult to put into words.

A Full Circle Moment

Watching Colleen and Tyler step into parenthood after documenting the beginning of their marriage was incredibly meaningful.

One of my favorite parts of this job is getting to stay connected long after the wedding day. Engagements become weddings. Weddings become maternity sessions. Before long, there are family sessions with little feet running through the frame.

Those relationships are what make this work so rewarding.
