If you photograph weddings long enough, you eventually realize you’re not just a photographer. You’re also a travel coordinator, logistics manager, client concierge, problem solver, accountant, and small business owner.

Especially if you photograph destination weddings.
Between flights, rental cars, hotels, airport delays, lounge layovers, baggage fees, and thousands of dollars in travel expenses floating on your credit card every month, the card you carry matters more than you probably think.
I’ve had my American Express Platinum Card for years, and it’s become one of the few business expenses that easily pays for itself. While the annual fee initially feels steep, the value adds up quickly if you’re traveling regularly for weddings.
Here’s why I think it’s the best credit card for photographers:
Thanks for reading! Here’s a quick disclosure: This article isn’t sponsored by American Express. I’ve personally used the Platinum Card for years while traveling for weddings, and it’s become one of my favorite business tools. Wedding photographers rarely travel like vacationers.
We’re hauling camera bodies, lenses, drones, batteries, hard drives, film, light stands, and usually trying to arrive rested enough to work a 10 to 12 hour wedding the next day.
The biggest perk of the Platinum Card is access to airport lounges through the American Express Global Lounge Collection, including Centurion Lounges, Priority Pass lounges, Delta Sky Clubs (when flying Delta), and more.
Instead of sitting on the floor near an outlet eating overpriced airport food, you can usually find:
When you’re editing previews, answering client emails, or simply trying to decompress between flights, this becomes a luxury you quickly stop wanting to live without.

Travel delays happen.
Especially if you’re flying across the country during wedding season. I’ve personally had overnight delays on every (yes every) international work trip I’ve ever been on.
One of my favorite benefits is the travel protections built into the Platinum Card. Depending on your trip and eligibility, benefits can include reimbursement for certain expenses caused by covered delays, lost baggage, trip interruptions, or canceled flights.
Hopefully you never need them.
But when you’re traveling with tens of thousands of dollars in camera equipment and can’t simply “take the next flight,” having additional protection provides real peace of mind.
Always review the current terms and coverage details before relying on these benefits, as they can change.

Destination weddings almost always mean rental cars.
Whether you’re driving mountain roads in Colorado, navigating downtown Charleston, or making your way through Napa wine country, those rental costs add up quickly.
Using the Platinum Card can provide rental car benefits when you decline the rental company’s collision damage waiver and meet the eligibility requirements.
It’s one less thing to worry about during an already busy travel day.
Destination photographers often spend dozens of nights in hotels every year.
The Platinum Card includes hotel benefits through select programs that can offer perks like:
No, I don’t book luxury resorts every weekend, but when those upgrades happen they’re always appreciated.
A quiet room, a better workspace, or simply not feeling rushed on checkout day can make a noticeable difference.
If you’re constantly flying with camera gear, every minute in airport security matters.
The Platinum Card offers statement credits for programs like TSA PreCheck and CLEAR. And once you’ve experienced walking through security in just a few minutes instead of standing in a 45-minute line while carrying two Pelican cases, it’s hard to go back.

Professional photography equipment isn’t cheap.
Neither are MacBooks.
Or drones.
Or hard drives.
The Platinum Card includes purchase protections and extended warranty benefits on many eligible purchases made with the card.
Again, read the current terms because coverage varies, but it’s another layer of protection for equipment that often costs thousands of dollars.
Wedding photography comes with significant business expenses.
Flights. Hotels. Advertising. Software subscriptions. Office supplies. Prints. Education. Client gifts.
Those purchases add up quickly, which also means the Membership Rewards points do. I usually redeem mine for flights, making destination weddings much more affordable over time. Better yet, those savings let me book better flight options so I arrive rested instead of dragging myself into a wedding weekend after a red-eye.
Beyond travel rewards, the Platinum Card also includes a variety of statement credits that I actually use in everyday life. Depending on your enrollment and eligibility, these can include credits for Walmart+, select streaming services, digital entertainment, Uber, Saks Fifth Avenue, and more. When you’re already paying for many of these services, the value really starts to add up and helps offset the annual fee. Just be sure to check the current benefits, as eligible credits and terms can change over time.
This might be my favorite benefit. When something goes wrong during travel, I don’t want to spend hours arguing with automated phone systems. American Express has consistently provided some of the best customer service I’ve experienced.
Whether replacing a lost card while traveling or helping resolve a travel issue, they’ve been fast and genuinely helpful. When you’re days away from a wedding, that matters.

For someone who flies once or twice a year?
Probably not.
For destination wedding photographers or those of us who fly more than 3 times a year for personal or business?
In many cases, absolutely.
When you combine lounge access, hotel perks, airline benefits, free checked bags, travel protections, purchase protections, statement credits, the points you’ll earn through normal business spending, and all the statement credits and memberships you get, it’s surprisingly easy to offset the annual fee.
More importantly, it makes travel cheaper and less stressful when used right.
And when your job depends on arriving rested, organized, and ready to perform at your best, that’s worth investing in.
There are plenty of business tools that promise to improve your workflow.
Very few actually improve your quality of life. The American Express Platinum Card has become one of those tools for me. It doesn’t make me a better photographer, but it absolutely makes traveling for weddings easier, more comfortable, and less stressful. If you’re photographing destination weddings regularly, it’s one business investment I’d recommend looking into.
If you know it’s not right for you, the American Express Blue Cash Preferred Card is the next best option. With cash back ranging from 1-6% on household purchases and a small annual fee, it’s a great option for those of you who may not be traveling heavily.
Here’s my Amex referral link. Use it and we could both earn rewards if you are approved and get a Card. Check out offers and Card benefits: https://americanexpress.com/en-us/referral/blue-cash-preferred-credit-card?ref=SARAHMG9B3&xl=cp108t
