Oxbow Estate in Clayton, NC, is a luxurious wedding venue set in a scenic location along the Neuse River. The property features a stunning main house, outdoor ceremony areas, and multiple event spaces. So what’s the issue?
First, the Oxbow Estate as it is now (2024), is on a MASSIVE piece of land that is undeveloped minus a few quaint buildings that are part of the estate grounds. A development project has been approved on this land to put in a neighborhood (yes, a residential neighborhood), that butts right up the Oxbow Estate. Based on maps, the Oxbow will only retain its immediate lawn:

This whole space is what’s currently known as the Oxbow Estate and what will remain is the portion in red which is where the main house is. I can only image the struggles the venue will have once the neighborhood goes in with noise complaints – eeek!
The second controversy is the Oxbow Estate *allegedly* pulling it’s access to the upstairs getting ready area which was a huge selling point for couples! Now, couples will be getting ready in a nearby out building that’s commonly used as an Air BnB which is significantly smaller than the upstairs of the main house.
The next controversy is the 40 guest limit inside the main house itself. This is a fire code issue, so not necessarily the fault of the Oxbow Estate, but the venue seems to have left that information out of consults. When the wedding day itself rolls around there are *allegedly* staff with clickers counting the number of guests in the house at any given time making sure it’s under 40. Not a huge problem, but if the main bar is located inside the main house, it’s a bit of a turn off. Also, there is no rain plan for a party over 40; you’re stuck under the tent in the lawn rain or shine.
And finally the construction bait and switch – Spring 2025 couples have reported that there will be construction happening throughout the spring and summer of 2025 that the venue has just now informed their couples of. I’m not sure if this is construction on the main house, the grounds, or if this is the beginning of the master development project. If you know, chime in in the comments!
Overall, the Oxbow Estate is still hosting weddings and is a really unique space in the area. However, the lack of communication and honesty have couples worried. The venue is being good about refunding couples who no longer want to have their weddings there for the time being which is admirable and understandable.
If you’re a couple affected by the Oxbow Estate Controversy, here’s a few of my favorite venues to consider:
For the Eurpoean/Tuscan vibe that the Oxbow provides, consider The Bradford in New Hill, NC
For the old world feel, look into Chateau des Fleures, Twickenham House, or Castle McCulloch
For a regal estate look, try The Merrimon-Wynne House, Donovan Manor , or The Lumen House
