Steven proposed to Shay at the North Carolina Museum of Art with their people nearby, which already tells you everything about them. (See their proposal here!) Thoughtful, grounded, not into doing things halfway. I got to photograph that moment, so being there again for their wedding felt a little full circle in the best way.
When it came time to actually get married, they kept it simple. Immediate family, downtown Raleigh, no extra noise. Just a day that felt like them.
Before the ceremony, we met outside the North Carolina State Capitol for their first look. The city was still waking up, light hitting just right, and they had this quiet pocket of time together. You could see the nerves soften the second they saw each other. A lot of laughing, a few deep breaths, a couple of “okay, this is really happening” moments.

The ceremony itself was inside the Wake County Justice Center. If you’ve never been, it’s straightforward. Wood paneling, flags, a courtroom that doesn’t try to be anything it’s not. And somehow that makes everything feel even more real.
No distractions. No production. Just them, standing there, saying yes to each other.
Shay’s dress moved so effortlessly when she walked in, and Steven’s face gave him away immediately. That mix of pride, relief, and “wow, I get to marry her.” You could feel the energy shift when they exchanged vows. It wasn’t loud, but it was strong. The kind of moment that lands and stays with you.

Afterward, they walked out to their family cheering, which felt like the perfect release. Shay threw her bouquet up like she’d been waiting all day to celebrate, and honestly, same.
We wandered downtown for portraits hunting little pockets of light between buildings. Every spot felt different. Some moments were playful, some more quiet and romantic. Nothing forced. Just them being themselves and letting the day unfold.
There’s something about courthouse weddings that cuts straight to the point. No expectations to manage, no timeline packed to the second. Just intention. And that’s why they hit so hard emotionally. Steven and Shay didn’t need anything elaborate to make this feel big. It already was.
